Designing Systems with Impact: Meet Frank Weslien

In our series highlighting the people behind Upptec, we turn to the tech side of the organization.

In our series highlighting the people behind Upptec, we turn to the tech side of the organization. This time we meet Frank Weslien, Backend Developer, who plays a key role in building the systems that enable automation and simplify everyday work for claims handlers and policy holders.

Frank’s role is broad and hands-on with a strong focus on automation, stability and scalability.

“As a Backend Developer at Upptec, I work on developing our systems to support our customers´ growing need for automation. My day-to-day work ranges from debugging and implementing new features to testing, discussing solutions with colleagues, managing our cloud environment and deploying new versions to production.”

What motivates him most is the responsibility and influence that come with the role.

“I really value being trusted with a lot of responsibility and having a strong say in how our systems are designed. Knowing that what I build has a clear impact on our customers and makes their everyday work easier is incredibly motivating.”

A key strength in Frank’s work is how closely development collaborates with the rest of the organization. At Upptec, feedback flows quickly from teams such as support, sales, product, and Customer Success into development and further into the product. The company’s flat structure and agile way of working make it possible to stay focused on what actually creates value, without unnecessary processes slowing things down.

Rewarding work

Although his main focus is backend development, Frank often works across the entire application.

What I find most rewarding about working across the whole application is getting a complete picture of how everything fits together, from a user’s button click through to the downstream effects in the backend and database. That perspective makes it much easier to design solutions that actually solve the right problem in the right way.

Through customer dialogues and participation in industry events, Frank has gained valuable insights into the insurance industry. While the Nordic markets are generally ahead in digitalization, he sees clear potential to further automate and streamline manual processes. Differences between European markets, shaped by regulations, customer expectations and company structure, also influence how Upptec’s solutions are designed.

These insights guide how Frank approaches development. He starts by understanding the real problem the user is facing and often uses quick prototypes to turn vague needs into concrete solutions.

“What I find most interesting is the mix of technical challenges and clear business value. Working on everything from internal systems to AI-driven automation in support handling has been both challenging and fun and it has a real impact by reducing manual work and freeing up time for more complex cases.”ntly need new ways of thinking. You have to be curious, solution-oriented, and willing to challenge old ways of working.”

Asked how his colleagues would describe him, Frank keeps it simple:

“Technical, driven, straightforward and an early bird”

With a Master of Science in Engineering from LTH and a long-standing interest in programming, Frank brings both depth and curiosity to his role. He is used to taking ideas all the way from concept to production and continues to explore new technologies alongside improving existing systems.

Through his strong sense of ownership and user-driven approach, Frank plays a key role in shaping Upptec’s platform. His work helps ensure that Upptec’s solutions remain reliable, scalable and focused on what matters most: creating real value for customers through smart automation.
